Intel Chips to become super fast with New Laser Technology Inside

A silicon-based chip that can produce laser beams has been created, according to the New York Times. This development makes it possible to use laser light, rather than wires, to send data between chips.

With this new technology, chip-makers may be able to put the high-speed data communications industry on the same curve of increased processing speed and diminishing costs (the phenomenon known as Moore's law) that has driven the computer industry for the last four decades. You can think of it in terms related to the evolution of HDD, or RAM. HDD almost double their capacity every year that passes by.

Researched at Intel at the University of California, Santa Barbara, the chips will not be distributed before the end of the decade, but the prospect of being able to place hundreds or thousands of data-carrying light beams on standard industry chips is certain to shake up both the communications and computer industries.

This would mean we can expect a large increase in speeds of chips produced, but I still donno what's Intel gonna do about the amount of Heat generated.
